Results of the 2016 IAU HESD Survey

The first edition of the IAU HESD Global Survey was developed in order to: connect with IAU Members; research and analyze what their approaches are to sustainable development; determine how IAU can exchange and enhance such initiatives; advocate for HESD worldwide.

The survey was opened from June 2016 to October 2016 and the results were presented by Hilligje Van't Land, IAU Deputy Secretary General, during the IAU 15th General Conference in Bangkok in November 2016.

We received 120 responses in total (97% from IAU Members), including 66 fully completed survey; 18% of our Members participated and all continents were represented.


Main findings:

  • Awareness on sustainable development

> 70% know well or very well about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

58% know well or very well about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

70% are familiar with the Whole Institution Approach.

Sustainable development (SD) is considered, in most cases, to be linked to environmental issues (84%), but also societal (68%) and cultural (60%) issues.

  • Sustainable development is being integrated within Universities, including at the strategic level. Yet progress still needs to be made

45% adopted a Whole Institution Approach.

34% have a strategic plan related to SD, 38% are developing one.

Sustainability initiatives are mainly developed in faculty department, sustainability centres but also student organizations.

56 % have professional development programs related to SD.

  • Universities are collaborating on sustainable development issues especially at local and national levels

70% are engaged with other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on SD. 

Universities surveyed are also engaged in other HESD networks including COPERNICUS Alliance, HESI, SDNS, Gupes…
