Activities to foster interreligious dialogue and peace at UC Chile

In today’s context of geopolitical instability and social polarisation, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC Chile) exemplifies how Catholic universities can foster peace and dialogue within their communities and beyond.

Guided by Catholic social teaching, UC Chile has engaged with global conflicts like the Ukraine war and the Israel-Palestine crisis through initiatives promoting ethical reflection, respectful dialogue, and understanding. Highlights include hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an online event and organising meetings with Israeli and Palestinian ambassadors to facilitate open conversations.

The university recommends several approaches to promote dialogue and understanding within higher education institutions, including:

  • Interdisciplinary academic forums exploring ethical and humanitarian aspects of conflicts
  • Interreligious dialogue tables fostering respect among faith communities
  • Mediation and conflict resolution programs to manage disputes constructively
  • Support services for international students affected by conflict
  • Establishing centres dedicated to dialogue and peace-building

Rooted in its Catholic identity, UC Chile nurtures an environment where diverse perspectives are respected, freedom of expression is balanced with ethical responsibility, and prayer supports the pursuit of peace.

UC Chile’s experience demonstrates the important role Catholic higher education can play as a space for ethical leadership, dialogue, and peace-building, offering valuable lessons for universities worldwide.
