For greener labs - Recycling plastics and gloves

Since autumn 2022, laboratory gloves and plastics from INRS's Quebec City building have been collected separately and recycled.

Some 1.6 tonnes of plastic are diverted from incineration each year and sent directly to the municipal sorting center, which resells the plastic by the bale to Canadian industries.

The laboratory glove recycling program was funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Youth Secretariat. Nitrile, vinyl and latex gloves are transformed by Go Zero into sports and agricultural equipment, among other recycled products. Around 35,000 gloves are diverted from incineration every year.
