Climate Change and the Educational Continuum: An Opportunity to put it into Practice in General Education in Senegal

Senegal has recently approved strategy documents for integrating and strengthening climate change issues and dimensions in their education and training system. One of the strategy’s objectives is to improve school curricula and community development programs that address issues related to climate change across the educational continuum. Other objectives are to take on an interdisciplinary approach to address CCE and to implement pathways for better-integrating climate change into Senegal’s pre-primary, primary, and secondary education system and school curricula.

This case study aims to identify existing and potential gateways for driving adjustments to the education and training system in Senegal towards a more sustainability-conscious citizenry. The research team consists of three researchers from the University of Dakar and two government officials, including the Senegal Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) Focal Point for the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The team will conduct an analytical literature review on the issue of climate change in Senegal’s education continuum. The study seeks to identify the different policies, curricular approaches, and pedagogical practices, as well as state actors and non-state bodies that play a role in adjusting the educational system to include more climate change content. The research will also map educational readjustment needs and analyze output profiles concerning the necessary readjustments.
