Green Campus Policy at NICHE

Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE) has introduced a new Green Campus Policy aimed at promoting sustainability, environmental responsibility, and eco-friendly practices across all aspects of campus life. The policy sets out the institution’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, positioning the campus as a model for green practices. 

Key Objectives

  • Minimise the environmental footprint of campus operations (energy, water, waste)
  • Promote awareness and participation among students, faculty and staff in green practices
  • Integrate sustainability into curricula, research and campus life
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement in environmental performance

Main Areas of Action

  • Energy management: Efficient use of electricity, adoption of renewable energy where feasible
  • Water conservation: Measures to reduce water usage, recycling and reuse of water resources
  • Waste management: Segregation, recycling, reduction of single-use items and proper disposal
  • Green infrastructure & landscaping: Planting trees, maintaining green spaces, ecological landscaping
  • Transport & mobility: Encouraging use of public transport, bicycles, reducing vehicle emissions
  • Curriculum & research: Embedding sustainability topics into teaching, encouraging green research projects
  • Awareness & behaviour change: Campaigns, workshops and training for the campus community
  • Monitoring & evaluation: Regular assessment of performance against targets, reporting and review

Roles & Responsibilities

  • The institution’s leadership is responsible for setting policy, providing resources and oversight
  • Departments and units must implement the policy in their domain (labs, offices, classrooms)
  • Individual students, faculty and staff are expected to act responsibly and contribute to green objectives
  • A designated team or committee is likely tasked with coordination, monitoring and reporting of green-campus initiatives

Implementation Strategy

  • Setting measurable targets (e.g., energy reduction, waste reduction)
  • Identifying key performance indicators (KPIs) and monitoring progress
  • Conducting audits and assessments periodically
  • Encouraging innovation and ideas from the campus community for sustainability initiatives
  • Ensuring that new building/infrastructure projects follow green design principles
  • Reporting outcomes and revising the policy as needed to improve performance
