CityUHK’s project drives global sustainability through affordable innovations
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is proud to lead the Fostering Innovation for Resilience and Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) Programme, officially endorsed by UNESCO under the UN International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024–2033). FIRST aims to accelerate sustainable innovation and advance key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through global collaboration and capacity building.
Announced at the 10th STI Forum in May 2025, FIRST is among only 30 proposals worldwide to receive UNESCO endorsement. The programme focuses on developing affordable, scalable technologies addressing climate change, clean energy, water management, and biodiversity, especially in underserved regions.
Launched in June 2025, the first phase will pilot innovations such as passive cooling coatings from local waste, printable solar films, biomass-to-energy conversion, and human-powered sanitation systems. These efforts align with SDGs 6, 7, 11, and 13, while emphasizing community engagement and measurable impact.
FIRST brings together experts and institutions from 16 countries, fostering a truly global partnership. CityUHK’s leadership and student involvement will be key to driving this transformative work.
