Created by decree no. 2012-985 of October 10, 2012, Peleforo Gon Coulibaly University is the result of the transfer of the former Unité régionale de l'enseignement supérieur (URES) de Korhogo from the University of Bouaké in central Côte d'Ivoire, created by decree no. 96-614 of August 9, 1996. Since its opening, the university has been part of the LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorat) system.
The university is named after Péléforo Gbon Coulibaly, a former traditional chief of the Korhogo region, who was close to Ivorian president Félix Houphouët-Boigny. The main mission of Peleforo Gon Coulibaly University is to ensure the training of executives specializing in local, rural and community development.
