About
Tokai University (東海大学, Tōkai Daigaku) is a major private higher-education institution in Japan, founded in 1942 by Shigeyoshi Matsumae. It has grown into a comprehensive university with approximately 30,000 students and a network of multiple campuses located across the country, from Sapporo in the north to Kumamoto in the south. The university encompasses a wide range of academic disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, engineering, marine studies, and the natural sciences, and is known for its strong emphasis on practical, research-driven education. Tokai University is also highly internationalized, maintaining exchange and cooperation agreements with institutions worldwide to support global learning and research opportunities. With a commitment to cultivating well-rounded, socially responsible leaders, the university continues to contribute actively to regional development, community engagement, and sustainable societal progress.
Sustainable Development at Tokai University
Since Tokai University announced its Environmental Charter in 1997, it has undertaken a variety of environmental activities, including the placement of recycling bins, the creation of energy- and water- conservation seals, and presentations at the Founding Ceremony. Further, in June 2003, Shonan Campus and the Tokai University Junior College of Nursing and Technology Campus were both ISO 14001-certified. ISO 14001 is an international standard of environmental management. Through certification, Tokai University has received international recognition for its commitment to environmental efforts. Tokai University understands this certification, not as evidence of it being “a university that is kind to the environment,” but as the beginning of the creation of a new system where we can engage in even higher degrees of environmental conservation activities.
The university's commitment to global environmental conservation is tied to our founding mission, “bringing eternal peace and happiness to humanity.” Through various educational and research activities, the university will aggressively promote global environmental conservation, and will nurture the development of human personnel who can contribute to “coexistence between people, society, and nature.”
