The algorithm in the room: Seeing and confronting the implications of AI for the future of education

The UNESCO publication "The algorithm in the room: Seeing and confronting the implications of AI for the future of education," compiles 26 think pieces confronting ‘elephant in the room’ questions about the future of education in an era of AI and algorithms. 

This collection of 26 think pieces aims to see and confront the ‘algorithms in the room’ at work in education. The think pieces are organized around six urgent questions for the future:  

• Who will hold agency, autonomy and oversight?

• How will young people develop relationally, emotionally and cognitively?

• What will be meaningful and relevant for pedagogy and assessment?

• How will we think, question and express ourselves?

• How will we govern education as a common good that serves public purposes and is accountable to the public?

• How might AI affect imagination about education’s future?

Education in the age of AI is far from settled. It is vital for all actors in education to acknowledge and speak about the ‘algorithms in the room’. This will help them to determine what comes next and respond proactively to build just, equitable, and meaningful futures of education.
