Environmental Action Programme at University of Saint Joseph (Macau)

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has implemented a robust Environmental Action Programme designed to foster sustainable practices throughout its campus. This initiative reflects the institution's commitment to environment through operational improvements, educational engagement, and community participation.

Sustainable Campus Infrastructure
USJ's Ilha Verde campus, inaugurated in 2019, serves as a model of sustainable design, incorporating multiple green technologies:

  • Comprehensive rainwater harvesting and recycling systems

  • Solar electricity generation panels

  • Solar hot water heating installations

  • Energy-efficient LED lighting solutions

  • Innovative roof garden spaces

  • Advanced cross-flow ventilation systems

  • Low-transmission glazing for improved thermal efficiency

Recycling Programs and Sustainable Community
USJ also minimises and actively manages waste through the 3R’s principle: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. A separate waste collection system for batteries, ink and toner cartridges and recycling bins are placed around campus. A carbon-points machine that collects plastic bottles in exchange for prizes is also located on the ground floor in high visibility and easy access area. They strongly advocate the ban of single-use plastics, and for that, they have placed water refill stations on each level to provide clean and safe drinking water to avoid the need of purchasing single-use water bottles.
