Promotion of Sustainable Development by Sub-Saharan African Higher Education Institutions (2011)

The Association of African Universities (AAU), the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI) and the International Association of Universities (IAU) developed a project on the Promotion of Sustainable Development by Sub-Saharan African Higher Education Institutions

Universities and other higher education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa are all agents involved in strategies to enhance sustainable development in Africa. However there are few studies or data available on the role and practices that universities and other higher education institutions (HEIs) have adopted or are developing to promote and contribute to sustainable development in the region.

Objectives

  • present an overview of major actions, experiences and practices that sub-Saharan higher education institutions (HEIs) are developing to integrate sustainable development considerations within their activities
  • identify the emerging trends and the priority lines of action for the integration of sustainable development considerations in the work of sub-Saharan higher education institutions
  • raise awareness about the important role of HEIs for promoting sustainable development in the region
