Established in 2014, the IGGAs are organized by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS), International Association of Universities (IAU), and the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI).
