The mission of the Office of University Sustainability of Florida International University (FIU) is to create a culture of environmental stewardship. In alignment with FIU's Strategic Plan, the office aims to significantly reduce FIU's negative impacts on the natural environment by collaborating across university departments, enhancing student opportunties and internships, and developing community partnerships. The office will encourage environmental stewardship by instilling best practices that are sustainable, economically feasibly, and socially just.
Sustainability at FIU
Located on the MMC campus is FIU's Solar House, built in 2011 by their Solar Decathlon team. It is built to LEED Platinum standards and designed to be a net-zero facility.
FIU also has an informational page providing tips on how to lead a sustainable lifestyle while living on campus.
In 2009, FIU submitted its first Climate Action Plan to Second Nature, the lead supporting organization for the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment.
In 2015, FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg pledged to the American Campus Act on Climate.
The University is currently rated Silver under the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) following their submission in May 2016.
