Planetary Communications: A New Handbook for Sustainability Science Communication
Launched during Climate Week NYC 2026, Planetary Communications is a new handbook developed by the Stockholm Resilience Centre with contributions from more than 100 researchers, communicators, and sustainability experts worldwide. The publication was presented by Johan Rockström and aims to strengthen how complex environmental and climate science is communicated to different audiences.
Drawing inspiration from the Planetary Boundaries framework, the handbook introduces nine communication ingredients designed to make sustainability messages more accessible, relevant, and engaging. Rather than focusing solely on scientific evidence, it explores how communication can help bridge the gap between knowledge and action in addressing climate, biodiversity, and sustainability challenges.
The handbook reflects growing recognition that effective communication is an essential component of advancing sustainability and promoting informed action on global environmental challenges.
