Understanding Plastic Pollution in Uganda
On June 24, 2025, Kabale University hosted a public talk organized by NatureUganda, NEMA, and the Kabale Tourism Cluster to mark World Environment Day 2025. Focused on the theme “Understanding Plastic Pollution in Uganda,” the event aimed to raise awareness, share solutions, and mobilize collective action. It also featured the launch of NatureUganda’s sixth branch at Kabale University, strengthening conservation efforts in the Kigezi region.
Speakers highlighted the severity of Uganda’s plastic crisis, noting that the country generates about 600 tonnes of plastic waste daily, with less than half properly collected. NEMA’s Executive Director called for reducing single-use plastics and adopting a circular economy, while Kabale University representatives emphasized the need for sustainable coexistence with plastics. Civil society leaders pointed to political corruption, high conservation costs, and the heavy burden placed on communities as major challenges.
The event concluded with a strong call to action: “No Single-Use Plastics in Uganda.” This declaration captured the urgency of addressing plastic pollution and encouraged participants to champion sustainable solutions.
