Green Labels, Global Rankings or Green Systems?
Published in the journal Sustainability, the study Green Labels, Global Rankings or Green Systems? Universities, Their Sustainability Maturity and Diverse Pathways Toward National Green Transition examines sustainability efforts across 40 universities in Uzbekistan. Through institutional analysis and stakeholder interviews, the authors identify multiple pathways through which institutions integrate sustainability, including mission-driven, governance-driven, technology-driven, discipline-driven, and project-driven approaches.
Rather than ranking institutions, the study proposes a sustainability maturity framework designed to help universities assess their progress across different dimensions. The findings highlight the importance of leadership, partnerships, implementation, and institutional context in supporting sustainability and contributing to broader national green transition goals.
