New Sustainability Reporting Framework at Leuphana University

Leuphana Universität Lüneburg has published a new sustainability report based on European sustainability reporting frameworks, aligning its approach with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), despite not being legally required to do so as a university.

The report is accompanied by the university’s first comprehensive sustainability strategy and is informed by a stakeholder consultation involving students, academic and administrative staff, alumni, and civil society representatives. A key element is a double materiality assessment, examining both how sustainability issues affect the university and how the university impacts society and the environment.

Among the findings, social themes such as diversity, inclusion, and the societal impact of research and teaching were identified as particularly important. The report also highlights the university’s long-standing environmental commitments, including EMAS-certified environmental management, climate-neutral campus operations (Scopes 1 and 2) since 2014, and 100% renewable electricity use in 2025. Looking ahead, Leuphana aims to achieve broader climate neutrality by 2035 and strengthen the integration of sustainability and financial reporting.
