Chair of African and Caribbean Studies
The Chair of African and Caribbean Studies at the University of Costa Rica was created in response to the United Nations’ call during the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015–2025). With a focus on recognition, justice, and development, the Chair is a space for rethinking Afro-descendant histories and identities, both within Costa Rica and across the Americas.
While Costa Rica often highlights its Indigenous and European roots, the African presence—dating back to the colonial period and deepened by Afro-Caribbean migrations—is frequently overlooked. This initiative works to change that by encouraging research, education, and public discussion around Africa’s historical and ongoing contributions to the region.
The Chair brings together scholars, institutions, and communities to:
- Explore the role of Africa and the Caribbean in shaping the Americas
- Highlight the cultural, economic, and social impact of Afro-Caribbean diasporas
- Challenge exclusionary narratives and promote equity through knowledge
- Build academic networks focused on diversity, inclusion, and global understanding
Through partnerships, public engagement, and academic collaboration, the Chair aims to deepen awareness and support intercultural dialogue grounded in respect and shared history.
