Climate Action Network for International Educators - CANIE

CANIE is a grassroots initiative formed by international education practitioners from around the world who see the need and the opportunity for our sector to step up and act on climate. CANIE serves as a platform to bring the sector together to act as a catalyst for action. The aim is to develop and share resources, training and events to help individuals take action and to drive change within their institutions. The creation of CANNIE comes from the fact that there is a growing consensus that the next few years are critical. We need to radically and immediately reverse course on emissions to avert catastrophic climate change. Global warming is already impacting our lives; record temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events are being seen around the world and are particularly severe in many of the main source countries for international students.

The IPCC Report 2018 suggested we now have 10 years left at most to act. Emissions have to be cut by 45% by 2030 to have any chance of keeping global warming within 1.5°C above pre-industrial baseline levels by the end of the century. The longer we delay action, the sharper the necessary emissions cuts will have to be.
