Digitalization of Waste Management

Digitizing Waste is a collaboration between Concordia's Facilities Management and Concordia researchers and students. The goal of this initiative is to embed waste systems with sensors to provide detailed data on material flaws on campus, reduce waste, and make the process of waste more transparent. The initiative contains several actions:

• Development of a waste detection app that uses computer vision to provide instructions on how to dispose the object in question properly.
• Smart waste bins that detect items being disposed and provide sorting instructions to campus visitors.
• Embedding waste bins with fill level and weight senors to track waste flows and predice waste production at a community scale. 
• Arcade game (Waste Invaders) designed by a Concordia Sustainability Ambassador to teach players about waste sorting.
