Pathways to University for students from refugee backgrounds

Being one of the most engaged universities in the world in matters of Sustainable Development, the University of Auckland has a lot of initiatives for different communities and minorities. One of them is the students with refugee backgrounds. From campus visits and open days to scholarships and commitment to equity, the University of Auckland welcomes and supports students from refugee backgrounds. There are around 800 students from refugee backgrounds currently enrolled at the University of Auckland and even more who have successfully completed their studies.

The first initiative put in place for students from refugee backgrounds is the Undergraduate Targeted Admission Schemes (UTAS). The University has Undergraduate Targeted Admission Schemes (UTAS) for applicants from some equity groups, including students from refugee backgrounds. UTAS reserves a number of places in undergraduate programmes for applicants who have met the University Entrance (UE) standard but have not met the guaranteed entry score for the programme of their choice. Another initiative for students from refugee backgrounds is the Tertiary Foundation Certificate Programme.

The TFC was designed for students feeling lost or unprepared, who left school early and did not study for while, and who lack the grades needed for entry to university.

The TFC programme supports the University’s belief that anyone capable of studying at tertiary level should be given that opportunity. The major factors for your success in this programme are regular attendance, motivation and determination to maintain the necessary effort. Finally, the New Start Programme was launched for students from refugee backgrounds and struggling in life as well. New Start is a part-time preparation and bridging programme. It's a realistic introduction to the first year at the University.

The courses include study skills and are made up of an academic integrity course, lectures, tutorials, workshops, assignments with feedback and a final test. It is made for people over 20 and thinking of coming to university and welcomes everyone with the potential and drive to succeed.
