Surgery and Cancer Research Center - UCR

In 2021, the University Council of the University of Costa Rica approved the creation of the Center for Research in Surgery and Cancer (CICICA) with the purpose of promoting the work carried out by the University of Costa Rica (UCR) in this field and generate new knowledge that will have a positive impact on the health of the Costa Rican population.

CICICA will function as a specialized entity in the prevention and early detection of cancer that will be dedicated to basic and applied research, as well as the implementation of new tests and technologies that -due to their highly specialized or innovative nature- have not been able to be assumed by public health service providers in the country.

The figure of the research center will allow the articulation and strengthening of teaching, research and social action, as well as collaborative work with other university instances, as well as with national and international entities for an inter-, multi- and transdisciplinary treatment of this disease.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the country and worldwide, according to data from the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), hence this new research center will benefit directly to cancer patients, through specialized diagnostic tests and the use of state-of-the-art therapies increasingly in earlier stages of the disease, based on evidence of a high probability of therapeutic success.
