Sustainability Integration Study at Utrecht University

Utrecht University has recently signed a manifesto reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the integration of sustainability across all degree programmes.

To gain deeper insight into how sustainability is perceived and implemented in education, researcher Tim Stevens carried out a university-wide study involving close to 600 students and 200 lecturers. The results show that while sustainability is broadly considered a key element of higher education, its inclusion differs significantly between faculties and study programmes.

The study also indicates that students would like to see greater emphasis on developing practical competencies, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhancing their ability to address complex societal issues with confidence and agency. These results will be further explored in an interactive session at the university campus on 23 June, bringing together students, academic staff, and lecturers to discuss how sustainability can be more firmly embedded within curricula and better prepare students for future challenges.
