Transforming higher education: a global roadmap for the future

On 12 March, UNESCO published a roadmap for higher education to transform for the future. 

The publication “Transforming Higher Education: A Global Roadmap for the Future” presents a strategic vision for rethinking higher education systems worldwide. Developed from the discussions at the World Higher Education Conference 2022, the roadmap draws on global consultations involving thousands of experts and stakeholders to address emerging challenges and opportunities in the sector. It highlights key pressures facing universities, including technological change, demographic shifts, geopolitical tensions, and evolving funding models. The publication proposes a set of guiding principles to help higher education institutions become more inclusive, flexible, and responsive to societal needs. It emphasizes lifelong learning, international collaboration, academic freedom, and the use of innovation and digital technologies to improve teaching, research, and access. Ultimately, the roadmap positions higher education as a global common good with a crucial role in advancing sustainable development and shaping more resilient and equitable societies
