UFMG Sustentável: Sports Training Center to become energy self-sufficient
The Sports Training Center (CTE) at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) will achieve self-sufficiency by replacing the current gas boiler-based system with microturbines. This project is carried out via a contract signed between UFMG and Fluxo Soluções Integradas, a company that distributes Capstone Green Energy in Brazil.
The system will still burn gas, but instead of in the boiler, it will be in the microturbines which also cogenerate electricity. The heat left over in the turbine will heat the pool inside the center. Professor Braz de Jesus Cardoso Filho, technical coordinator of the project, states that while this change will not reduce gas consumption, it will improve efficiency. He states that gas used exclusively for heating has an efficiency level of 30-40% while with cogeneration this figure is closer to 90%.
If electricity generation becomes a surplus, it will feed into the university's mini-energy grid which the UFMG Oasis Project also implemented.
