Women’s Rights Unit at the Centre for Human Rights

Established in 1993, the Women’s Rights Unit at the Centre for Human Rights works towards the realisation of the rights of women and girls in Africa. Our work aims to promote the implementation and popularisation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol) through research, training, and advocacy. The Unit aims further to support the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa, to strengthen regional mechanisms with a commitment to the advancement of women’s rights, to promote gender-sensitive policies and practices and strategies for the provision of equal opportunities for women in Africa.

The Women’s Rights Unit at the Centre for Human Rights provide technical support to states and civil society actors on a number of areas including state reporting, shadow reporting, and engaging with concluding observations amongst other thematic issues.
