Fairmont State University’s roots reach back to the formation of public education in the state of West Virginia. The first private normal school in West Virginia was established to train teachers in Fairmont in 1865 by John N. Boyd, the school’s first principal. It was known as the West Virginia Normal School at Fairmont.

Sustainable Development
Fairmont State University has completed the Creative Sustainability Council, which is an interdisciplinary group of students, faculty, and staff members who collaborate actively with members of the local community and other partners on student-led sustainability projects and grant proposals. Creative Sustainability Council is also a registered student organization on campus with opportunities for student leadership development.
