Although it was created by Federal Law on June 12, 1962, the Federal University of Amazonas was installed three years later, on January 17, 1965, 39 years after the deactivation of the University of Manáos. Created as a public law foundation and maintained by the Union, the University received the name of Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) under the provision of Law on June 20, 2002. Currently constituted by 18 teaching units, including institutes and colleges, its structure initially incorporated the Faculty of Law, remnant of the University of Manáos, and the faculties of Economic Sciences and Philosophy, Sciences and Letters, isolated units of higher education, created and maintained by the state. This structure was also joined, by donation from the judge André Vidal de Araújo, the patrimony of the School of Social Service of Manaus. In the late 1990s, another unit of higher education was incorporated into the structure of Ufam - the Nursing School of Manaus, previously maintained by the Sesp Foundation, of the Ministry of Health. The institution's objective is to provide higher education and develop study and research in all branches of knowledge and scientific, technical and cultural dissemination.
