The Université de Montréal was founded in 1878 with the three faculties of theology, law and medicine, with the goal of offering higher education. Over the course of more than 135 years, it has become an institution serving society as a whole.

This plan sets our priorities for the next 10 years and defines the path we propose to take to achieve excellence and help change the world and the lives of our community’s members for the better.

In order to contribute to local, regional and global efforts towards sustainable development, the Université de Montréal, as an inspiring and influential citizen university, aims in all its activities, from management to teaching, from research to outreach, to (1) continuously reduce its ecological footprint and social inequalities, (2) the protection of the environment and biodiversity, (3) the development and promotion of technologies and ways of doing things that respect the environment, individuals and society, and (4) the creation of an eco-citizen university community (administrators, employees, students, etc.). ) to be eco-citizens.
The Sustainable Development Program's Objectives are:
- Establishing a governance framework for sustainable development
- Preserving the natural and architectural heritage of our campus
- Reducing our ecological footprint
- Encouraging public transport
- Promoting healthy lifestyles
- Making our campus an open and diverse space
