The University of the Western Cape (UWC) was founded in 1960 and is currently home to more than 23,000 students across seven faculties. UWC is a leader in research and innovation on the continent, which is reflected in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings. UWC has maintained its position in the 401-600 global ranking since 2021, but has steadily increased its score from 63.4 in 2021 to 72.2 in 2024.
UWC is a longstanding signatory for the Talloires Declaration, a worldwide statement with over 400 universities in 56 countries to commit to environmental sustainability in education.
In addition, UWC has strategic partnerships with multiple Norwegian universities. The South Africa-Sweden cooperation focuses on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, embodied by the South African Sweden Universities Forum (SASUF).
