About
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was established in 1916. Its mission is to provide value-based education, foster innovation and research to address global challenges, and its founding vision was to preserve and popularise the best of India’s ancient civilisation while imparting instruction along the lines of the finest modern universities. The university serves over 30,000 students and employs approximately 1,800 academic staff (“faculty”). It offers programmes across many faculties including Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Commerce, Law, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Agricultural Sciences, Medical Sciences and Education. Major research strengths include biological sciences, chemistry, earth & environmental sciences and materials science. The campus is fully residential with extensive facilities (libraries, hostels, research farms) and the university maintains global partnerships for exchange and collaborative research.
