Developing Tools for Smarter Nutrient Pollution Management

💧 ENGAGE is a research project focused on reducing nutrient pollution in aquatic ecosystems by supporting more informed water management decisions. Funded through the Water4All 2023 Joint Transnational Call on Aquatic Ecosystem Services, the project is developing a Decision Support Tool (DST) that helps stakeholders evaluate pollution reduction measures, considering both their environmental benefits and implementation costs.

In the Guadiana River Basin, representatives from water management, irrigation, and infrastructure sectors are contributing to the tool's development through a stakeholder engagement process. Discussions have explored measures such as:

➡️ Controlling pollution at its source
➡️ Strengthening enforcement of existing regulations
➡️ Expanding the reuse of treated wastewater

The project aims to connect scientific modelling with practical decision-making, enabling water managers and other stakeholders to better understand the impacts, costs, and trade-offs associated with different nutrient pollution reduction strategies.

ENGAGE brings together researchers and institutions from Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Latvia, and Lithuania and is supported by national funding agencies alongside the European Commission.
