FLCS archaeologists present research at the ASAPA Conference 2024

The biennial Conference of the Association of Southern African Professional Archeologists (ASAPA) in Lesotho took place between 26-28 June 2024. Four professors from the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FLCS) presented their research on preservation, protection, enhancement and sustainability of Mozambique's cultural heritage.

The four professors are Arti Chandra Macshaw, Cézar Mahumana, Énio Tembe and Celso Simbine.

Arti Chandra presented a research entitled "Proposal to classify the Quirimbas Archipelago as a mixed heritage of humanity: benefits for coastal communities". Their study addresses the potential link with the Rising from the Depths Network, which aims to use the marine heritage of Mozambique, Tanznaia, Kenya and Madagascar for the benefit of communities living on the coast.

Cézar Mahumane presented the theme "New approaches to protect maritime cultural heritage on the Island of Mozambique", highlighting the main activities carried out in the last decade to effectively protect Marine and Underwater Cultural Heritage, community engagement, sustainability and professionalization of the discipline.

Celso Simbine spoke on the "Ethnoarchaeological investigation of the Iron Age (communities of farmers and pastoralists) at the archaeological station of Sancul". His presentation discussed the preliminary results of research and archaeological excavation carried out at the Sancul site between 2023-2024, as part of his PhD programme.

Énio Tembe presented the research entitled "Food Diet on the coast of Southern Mozambique: development of intangible cultural heritage in the context of the Archaeological Park and the Biocultural Heritage of Chongoene and Xai-Xai". The research intends to stimulate an academic discussion around local food and the cultural industries linked to the Congoene and Xai-Xai Archaeological and Biocultrual Heritage Park project.
