Social Sustainability
Sustainability is meeting the needs of today without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This idea encompasses both the idea of resource conservation so future populations have access to the same resources including forests, clean air, and clean water, that their ancestors had available to them.
Sustainability also encompasses the idea of intra-generational equity where we ensure that everyone alive today can meet their needs. Often working toward achieving these goals focuses on the environment through water conservation activities or energy efficiency projects however, focusing on the human element of these goals is also part of sustainability.
