Education Sub-Saharan Africa (ESSA) Annual Report 2023/24

The 2023/24 Annual Report highlights a year marked by significant achievements and forward momentum for ESSA. Over the past year, ESSA collaborated with more than 600 African researchers through the Enhancing Education Research in Africa initiative to co-create eight evidence-based solutions aimed at advancing education across the continent.

The report also delivered critical insights into faculty demographics, revealing that Kenya alone will need 25,961 new faculty members by 2030 to meet growing demands. Capacity building remained a priority, with 46 researchers from 13 African countries trained in grant writing to strengthen research capabilities.

ESSA’s African Education Research Database expanded to include 6,500 publications, providing a rich resource for policymakers and academics alike. African voices were amplified through partnerships with prominent global platforms such as the Goal 4 Podcast, University World News, and DEVEX, raising awareness of education research issues on the international stage.

Organizational growth continued with strengthened teams and culture spanning five African countries and Europe. The year also welcomed two new trustees, Prof. Hellen Inyega and Abdelrahman Hassan, who bring valuable expertise to ESSA’s governance.

This report demonstrates ESSA’s ongoing commitment to driving research, collaboration, and policy impact in African education.
