The Healthy Environments and Lives Global Research Centre
On 26 March 2024, the University of Canberra (UC) launched the Healthy Environments and Lives (HEAL) Global Research Centre. This centre takes a global approach to addressing the health risks of climate change, and will also be a central hub for the nationwide HEAL National Research Network. The Network is supported by the National Healthy and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Special Initiative in Human Health and Environmental Change, and has a $10 million grant across 2022-2027.
The HEAL Global Research Centre will be transdisciplinary and led by Professor Sotiris Vardoulakis. The centre specializes in examining health impacts of air pollution, extreme temperatures and weather events, and climate-sensitive infectious diseases. They have a particular interest in identifying risks and supporting vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by climate change, including those with disabilities, pre-existing medical conditions, remote populations, and lower socio-economic communities.
