Universidad de Granada's "Wood For Future" Project Expands Riparian Restoration

The Universidad de Granada's (UGR) LIFE "Wood For Future" project, active from 2021 to 2025, is making significant strides in the restoration of the Vega de Granada poplar groves. The 2025 phase of this vital initiative includes the establishment of an additional 6 hectares of native riparian woodland.

Led by UGR Medialab in collaboration with NGOs Salvemos la Vega and the Huétor Vega municipality, the project is also implementing innovative approaches to monitoring tree health. This includes the installation of volunteer-operated tree-health sensors. Furthermore, the project hosted successful community planting days in March 2025, fostering local engagement in the restoration efforts.

A key component of "Wood For Future" is the training of 120 student volunteers as "poplar stewards." These students play an active role in the project, contributing to the restoration and monitoring of this important ecosystem.
