University of Toronto launches Lawson Climate Institute
The University of Toronto has launched the Lawson Climate Institute, a new hub dedicated to accelerating climate solutions that are practical, scalable, and equitable. Announced on Earth Day and supported by a landmark 60 million Canadian dollar gift from Brian and Joannah Lawson, this is the largest private donation ever made to a Canadian university for climate action.
The Lawson Climate Institute strengthens U of T’s leadership in addressing the climate crisis through innovation, research, and education. It empowers students across all disciplines to prioritize climate action and focuses on four key areas:
- Developing new technologies and policy solutions for sustainability
- Training climate leaders through the Lawson Scholars and Sustainability Pathways programs
- Using the university’s three campuses as living laboratories
- Expanding partnerships with government, industry, and civil society
The institute will also create three new endowed chairs in policy innovation, sustainable energy, and sustainable food systems. It brings together experts from science, engineering, law, economics, and public policy to create real-world impact and prepare students for careers that contribute to a net-zero future.
