About
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a public research university in Clear Water Bay Peninsula, New Territories, Hong Kong. Founded in 1991 by the British Hong Kong Government, it was the territory's third institution to be granted university status.
Today, the university consists of four main academic schools, offering programmes in science, engineering, business and management, humanities and social science, along with the Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies, HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School, Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute, HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study and HKUST Institute for Public Policy.
Sustainability at HKUST
As a world-class research and teaching university focusing on science and technology, HKUST contributes to sustainability through basic and applied research and undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs that train the next generation of environmentally aware leaders and thinkers. But there are many other ways in which the University community is playing its part in facing the challenges ahead.
The sustainability portal brings together the different activities being carried out at HKUST to act as a collective source of information, a driver for action, and an inspirational platform for further change at HKUST and in the world at large. It charts HKUST’s contribution to environmental protection from the University’s earliest days, our programs & research, ways to get involved, events we organize, the latest global news and links to sites offering further information. There are also interactive opportunities to share your experiences and knowledge to sustain the portal itself and help it to evolve.
HKUST is committed to protect the environment and minimize the impact of all its activities upon local, regional and global environments, both directly and through its influence on others, including members of the University community. In this regard, the University will:
- integrate environmental management policies and practices into every level and every department.
- contribute to a sustainable future by
- conserving natural resources
- minimizing waste and pollution
- improving energy efficiency and substituting for renewable energy sources
- avoiding use of hazardous materials and preventing damage to either public or ecological health when the use of such materials is unavoidable
- conducting effective waste management and recycling procedures
- using recycled and recyclable materials where possible
- increasing awareness of environmental responsibilities among staff and students through staff development and training, and through environmental teaching and research initiatives
