About

Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) is an international university established in 1990 and it is named after the patriarch of Lithuania‘s Constitutional Law Professor Mykolas Romeris (1880-1945). MRU is Lithuania's largest social sciences specialized university, located in the three biggest cities - Vilnius, Kaunas and Marijampole. It enrolls over 6,000 students, employs over 600 academic and administrative staff, and has a network of nearly 50,000 alumni, offering over 100 study programmes.MRU has a wide partnership network with over 200 national and international public and private sector organisations, and is a member of the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA) and numerous academic and professional networks.

The university fosters research and innovation culture by carrying out disciplinary and interdisciplinary fundamental and applied research under the innovative research management system – Social Innovations Laboratory Network MRU LAB.  MRU implements different national and international projects focused or related to different SDGs. The university successfully implements one of its most important missions, which is to foster a culture of scientific research and innovation.

Sustainability at MRU

MRU's sustainable development is based on the whole-institution approach and is included as a cross-cutting issue in studies, research, outreach to society activities and campus operations. MRU contributes to the implementation of the goals agreed in 2015 by the world leaders and operates according to the 2021-2023 Strategy for Sustainable Activities. 

SDG11 - MRU has 5 study programmes related to SDG11 as they are one of the international pilots for the Responsible Futures International programme. There are also 61 scientific papers published on SDG11. Beyond this, MRU has adopted sustainable campus operations through solar power plants on student dormitory roofing, mounted beehives on the Research and Innovation Centre roof for local ecosystems, fostered Student and Employee Gardens and natural environments, and more. They regularly organise events to engage the community as well. 

Community engagement and outreach to society - MRU organised Orange and Sustainability Days, welcomed local community people to engage in sports and enjoy the natural environment of MRU open areas and the park. The University enrolled Ukrainian war refugee students and employed researchers, shared its premises with the Ukrainian war refugees school Gravitas Schola, organised joint educational, sports and volunteering activities for Refugee Centre residents, engaged in environmental cleaning initiatives River CleanUp, Save the Baltics, carried out educational activities such as Sustainable Tourism Day, Cycle September, Car-Free Days, Walk 15, Plastic Detox Month, Meatless Mondays, Diversity and Inclusion through Arts, reviews of documentaries, etc. In partnership with the Lithuanian Ministry of Social Security and Labour, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports and the portal Municipal News organised National Community Awards.

Campus operations - MRU installed a solar power plant on the Student Dorm roof, mounted beehives which are crucially important for local ecosystems on the Research and Innovation Centre roof, fostered Student and Employee Gardens and natural MRU environments, measured public procurements, energy and water usage, resource saving and waste management activities against set targets.
