Green Dragons: Student-Led Sustainability

Green Dragons is a scheme by the City University London Students’ Union (CULSU) to encourage City students to identify opportunities, big or small, to improve sustainability at the university or in the local community, create solutions and bring new projects to life. Members of staff are also invited to participate.

The scheme is being funded through HEFCE’s and the National Union of Students’ Students Green Fund.

Results

Green Dragons is raising awareness in City University and the local community about:

  • recycling and reuse (Waste No More and Restart Project),
  • food waste (EATRO),
  • CO2 emissions reduction (City Green Monitor),
  • the environmental, social and economic benefits of healthy eating (Meat Free Mondays and Smart Sugar Crystals),
  • how innovation can address poverty and lack of skills (Hydrovillage),
  • the importance of integrating the environmental aspect into International Law (PIEL: Environmental Justice 4 All).

Innovative Aspects

Project support and skills training are provided by a team of experts from across City University. A student-led ‘Green Dragons Panel’, agrees with Green Dragons Leaders and their teams how many pledges each project should realistically achieve, before funding of between £500 and £5,000 is released.
