Lancet-SIGHT Commission on Peaceful Societies through Health and Gender Equality

About the Lancet-SIGHT Commission

The Lancet-SIGHT Commission on Peaceful Societies through Health and Gender Equality is an independent and international commission dedicated to identifying how improved health and gender equality can contribute to peace. The Commission is hosted at SIGHT - the Swedish Institute for Global Health Transformation - and is composed of a multidisciplinary group of 25 researchers and practitioners with expertise in health, gender, peace, and conflict.

The Commission is chaired by Tarja Halonen, the former President of Finland, and co-chaired by Zulfiqar Bhutta, Peter Friberg, and Catherine Kyobutungi. The Lancet-SIGHT Commission is developing new evidence, frameworks, and recommendations to advance the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda, in particular the goals for health (SDG 3), gender equality (SDG 5), and peace, justice and strong institutions (SDG 16).

The Commission’s guiding question is: Can improved health equity and gender equality contribute to more peaceful societies? The Commission is bringing together typically separate disciplines and sectors to address evidence gaps needed to inform policy and practice, and is developing an agenda for future policy action and research. The Commission’s work will be synthesized in a Lancet report (publication estimate late 2021). This will be followed with a dedicated phase to disseminate, implement, and monitor the report’s findings, in partnership with organizations around the world.
