Waste trafficking in Europe: Management Offences, Trafficking Networks and Crime Prevention

From 26 September to 1 October 2026 in Abu Dhabi, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime will hold the Fifteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The overall theme will be “Accelerating crime prevention, criminal justice and the rule of law: protecting people and planet and achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the digital age.”

🌱♻️The side event "Waste Trafficking in Europe: Management Offences, Trafficking Networks and Crime Prevention," will bring together academics, policymakers, legal experts, and international organizations to explore the growing challenge of illegal waste trafficking and its impact on people, ecosystems, and the rule of law. Organized by the International Association of Universities (IAU), with support from the COAST Research Center for Climate, Energy and Sustainability Law at the University of Bergen and the UNEP Regional Seas Programme, the session will examine waste-management offences, cross-border trafficking networks, enforcement challenges, and crime prevention strategies.
