About

The University of Rome Unitelma Sapienza is a private university founded in 2004 in Rome, Italy. Unitelma - Sapienza is the only on-line Italian university that is maintained by a consortium composed of public universities and enterprises. Since 2010 it is linked to and owned by one of the top Italian public universities, Sapienza University of Rome, which uses Unitelma Sapienza to promote the right to education and to support non-traditional students. Sapienza University of Rome, one of the largest universities in Europe by enrollment, has over 130,000 students and a staff of 4,000 teachers and researchers. Sapienza and Unitelma Sapienza, which are co-located in Rome, offer multiple joint degrees with faculty often teaching at both universities.

Mission

Unitelma Sapienza, through the use of advanced information technology and methodologies in distance learning, promotes access to higher education to students who are unable to attend regular educational activities. The university pays particular attention to the development of research, in particular within scientific and economic sectors, as well as in management of information technology, with particular attention to theories, models, processes, technologies and applications for the development of a virtual campus through the internet.

A special focus is given to tutoring: the university offers tutors concerned with academic activities, student motivation, and the achievement of student career goals. The university aims to combine the foci to increase interactivity with students for a more cooperative learning environment.

Sustainability

Sustainable development at the University of Rome Unitelma Sapienza focuses on innovative production processes and consumption patterns  and a strategy of circular use of natural resources. Circular economy plays a central role in the transition towards sustainability and aligns with the "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development."

Another essential requirement is also the involvement of a plurality of subjects, with the University of Rome Unitelma Sapienza having a close collaboration with the Network of Universities for Sustainable Development (RUS) aimed at promoting the sharing of skills and experiences and increasing the positive impacts of the initiatives undertaken by UnitelmaSapienza. The activities promoted by the School of Advanced Training on Sustainability and the Circular Economy (SUSTAIN) fit into this framework of rapid change and necessary transition.

Bioeconomy in Transition

With the world population projected to increase by almost one billion in the next decade and to 9.6 billion in 2050, there will be a growing consumption and demand for food and goods, increasing as well the rate of waste. Moreover, large economies will experience increasing wealth therefore changing the global population significantly. 

These are some of the so-called grand societal challenges. In the attempt to address these challenges UnitelmaSapienza, created BiT: an interdisciplinary research group conducting policy-oriented research. The strategic areas for the research activities are: Sustainabile transitions towards a  circular bioeconomy and Sustainable food system.
