African Ocean Biodiversity Atlas
Led by Ocean Rock Base – Ghana, the African Ocean Biodiversity Atlas is a groundbreaking initiative designed to improve ocean awareness, data accessibility, and sustainability efforts across the African continent. The project develops and deploys Multifunctional Ocean Applications and technologies to support better understanding and protection of marine ecosystems.
Central to the initiative is the creation of a Fisheries Atlas and a Blue Carbon Biodiversity programme focused on Africa’s coastal landing beaches. These tools generate evidence-based recommendations to inform the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and strengthen coastal resource management.
The Atlas functions as a comprehensive repository of marine biodiversity data, covering species such as fish, mangroves, algae, and seaweeds. It also promotes data sharing among local and Indigenous fishing communities, supporting inclusive knowledge exchange and long-term conservation.
