BIOTRACES Project - Biodiversity and Transformative Change
There is growing recognition that even the full implementation of current conservation and restoration efforts would not be enough to reverse the trend of biodiversity loss. What is needed is transformative change, defined as "the fundamental, system-wide reorganisation across technological, economic, and social factors, including paradigms, goals and values". The BIOTraCes project aims to start this change through an action research approach that addresses the root causes of biodiversity loss and promotes equity and justice for both people and the planet. The project tackles public policies, local and corporate strategies to be more inclusive and just.
Nine case studies will be performed in sectors with a high impact on biodiversity, ranging from food production, agriculture, forestry, water and fish conservation, and urbanisation.
The project is funded by the European Union HORIZON-RIA programme. It is coordinated by Wageningen University and Research, the Netherlands and involves the following partners in the consortium:
- University of Gothenburg, Sweden
- University of Coimba, Portugal
- Centre for Ecological Research, Hungary
- Basque Centre for Climate Change, Spain
- Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuania
- Università di Catania, Italy
- University of Twente, the Netherlands
- Babes-Bolyai University, Romania
- European Science Communication Institute, Germany
- Centro de Estudios Ambientales, Spain
The project began in December 2022 and will end in November 2026.
