UNESCO Floating University
From 1–15 May 2026, the “Floating University” will set sail for the fourth time. The initiative brought together 14 Master’s students from the program “Climate Change and Marine Sciences” at Universidade Técnica do Atlântico (UTA) in Cabo Verde, alongside international scientists and researchers aboard the research vessel POLARSTERN. Led by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Kiel, in partnership with Universidade Técnica do Atlântico and supported through the WASCAL programme, the expedition travelled from Cabo Verde to Germany, providing participants with hands-on experience in marine science, climate observation, and oceanographic research.
Through practical fieldwork, biodiversity monitoring, and international scientific collaboration, the initiative strengthens research capacity and supports knowledge exchange between Europe and West Africa. The programme contributes directly to the UN Decade of Ocean Science and aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by promoting climate resilience, scientific education, and global cooperation in ocean sustainability.
